Space Bunny Alpha on OpenRouter

One model string, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint and a free price. This is the complete OpenRouter setup for Space Bunny Alpha, from API key to video input.

Status: Unclaimed · Free Space Bunny Alpha is still unclaimed. No lab has officially named it. Last checked September 30, 2026.

Space Bunny Alpha on OpenRouter in One Minute

OpenRouter was where Space Bunny first appeared, and it is still the easiest way to call Space Bunny from code. OpenRouter exposes an OpenAI-compatible API, so any client that talks to OpenAI can talk to Space Bunny after you change two settings: the base URL and the model name.

SettingValue
Base URLhttps://openrouter.ai/api/v1
Model IDstealth/space-bunny-alpha
EndpointPOST /chat/completions
Context / max output1,000,000 / 524,288 tokens
Price$0 input, $0 output
Supported paramsreasoning, reasoning_effort, include_reasoning, tools, tool_choice, temperature, top_p, max_tokens, response_format, stream

Step 1: Get an OpenRouter API Key

  1. Sign up at openrouter.ai. No card is required for free models.
  2. Go to Settings → Keys and create a key. Give it a credit limit of $0 if you only want free Space Bunny usage.
  3. Go to Settings → Privacy and make sure providers that may retain prompts are allowed. OpenRouter will not route to Space Bunny otherwise.
  4. Store the key as the OPENROUTER_API_KEY environment variable.

Step 2: Your First Space Bunny Request

The quickest test is a curl call. Low effort keeps the first Space Bunny response fast:

curl https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENROUTER_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "stealth/space-bunny-alpha",
    "reasoning": { "effort": "low" },
    "messages": [
      { "role": "user", "content": "Write a Python function that dedupes a list while keeping order." }
    ]
  }'

The same request in Python, using the official OpenAI SDK pointed at OpenRouter:

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://openrouter.ai/api/v1",
    api_key="YOUR_OPENROUTER_KEY",
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="stealth/space-bunny-alpha",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Explain this stack trace and suggest a fix: ..."}],
    extra_body={"reasoning": {"effort": "medium"}},
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

OpenRouter accepts the reasoning object in the request body. With the OpenAI SDK you pass it through extra_body. The OpenRouter response includes a reasoning field when you ask for it, so you can inspect how Space Bunny worked through the problem.

Step 3: Pick a Reasoning Effort

Reasoning is mandatory on Space Bunny, but you control how hard it thinks. OpenRouter accepts five effort levels:

EffortUse it forTrade-off
lowChat, small edits, JSON extractionFastest; may skip edge cases
mediumEveryday coding (listing default)Balanced
highMulti-file changes, debuggingNoticeably slower
xhighHard algorithms, long plansLong thinking time
maxDeep agent runs, researchCan overthink simple prompts

Testers on YouTube found Space Bunny results vary a lot between effort levels. If a Space Bunny answer looks lazy, raise the effort before you give up on the model.

Image and Video Input

Space Bunny accepts images and video through OpenRouter's standard multimodal message format. A screenshot-to-code request looks like this:

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="stealth/space-bunny-alpha",
    messages=[{
        "role": "user",
        "content": [
            {"type": "text", "text": "Rebuild this screen as a single HTML file with Tailwind."},
            {"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": "https://example.com/screenshot.png"}},
        ],
    }],
    extra_body={"reasoning": {"effort": "high"}},
)

Video uses the same content array with a video part. Keep clips short at first, since video tokens add up quickly even in a 1M window. Space Bunny outputs text only, so it can describe or rebuild what it sees but cannot generate images.

Add a Fallback Before the Preview Ends

A stealth route can vanish overnight. OpenRouter lets you pass a models array, and if the first model fails it tries the next. This TypeScript example falls back from Space Bunny to MiniMax M3:

const res = await fetch("https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions", {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.OPENROUTER_API_KEY}`,
    "Content-Type": "application/json",
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    model: "stealth/space-bunny-alpha",
    models: ["stealth/space-bunny-alpha", "minimax/minimax-m3"], // fallback
    messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Summarize this changelog in five bullets." }],
  }),
});
const data = await res.json();
Tip: Log which model actually answered. The OpenRouter response includes a model field. If your traffic silently moves off Space Bunny, you will want to know.

Common OpenRouter Errors With Space Bunny

  • 404, no endpoints found: your privacy settings exclude providers that retain prompts. Allow them for the Space Bunny key.
  • 429, rate limited: you hit the free limit of about 20 requests per minute or the daily cap. Slow down or add credits to raise the cap.
  • Empty or cut-off answers: raise max_tokens. Reasoning tokens count toward the budget, so a small limit can be spent entirely on thinking.
  • Language drift: a few users saw Chinese appear mid-answer. Add "Respond only in English" to the system prompt.
  • Short outages: the Space Bunny endpoint went down briefly on launch day. Retries with backoff and a fallback model handle this.

Space Bunny on OpenRouter: FAQ

What is the Space Bunny model ID on OpenRouter?
The OpenRouter model ID is stealth/space-bunny-alpha. OpenRouter also shows a stealth/space-bunny-alpha:free variant page. Both route to the same anonymous provider at $0.
Is Space Bunny Alpha free on OpenRouter?
Yes. OpenRouter lists Space Bunny Alpha at $0 per million input and output tokens during the stealth preview. Standard free-model rate limits apply.
Why does OpenRouter return an error for Space Bunny?
The most common cause is privacy settings. Stealth models need providers that may retain prompts, so if your OpenRouter account blocks those providers, the Space Bunny request fails. Rate limits and short outages are the other usual causes.
Can I turn off reasoning for Space Bunny on OpenRouter?
No. OpenRouter lists reasoning as mandatory for Space Bunny Alpha. You can set effort to low and hide the reasoning text, but the model still thinks before it answers.
Does OpenRouter support video input for Space Bunny?
Yes. The listing shows text, image and video as input modalities. Output is text only.
Is OpenRouter the developer of Space Bunny?
No. OpenRouter states that it routes requests to Space Bunny but is not its developer, owner or provider. The provider has chosen to stay anonymous during the preview.
